The Widetrack Chronicles 29: Update (2017-09-28-Thur)

The Widetrack Chronicles 29: Update (as of 2017-09-26-Thur)

Ron here... Hope you had a wonderful summer!

Autumn has arrived... Hard to believe it's been 6 months since the house concert we put on which marked Zach's first-ever live performance, debuting as our bassist...

So much has happened since then... Thought it might be time for an update...

As previously stated, we are in the final mixing stages of the new album with veteran musician/producer/engineer Andy Patalan, who also happens to be one of the guitarists in the '90s rock band, Sponge...

Andy is a super-busy guy (rightly so!)... therefore, scheduling has been challenging at times... We get in the studio when we can and make the most out of it with the windows of time we can grab...

But the results are always SO worth it...

In any case, we are determined to have the album finished by the end of the year... Hopefully things line up schedule-wise to where this can happen...

This will be the third Widetrack album I've done with Andy, and he just keeps getting better and better at his craft of recording and mixing bands...

Here are a few samples of some of the nearly-finished songs... As you can hear, there is a new heaviness to the music only hinted at on the previous albums...

Meanwhile, the band has been rehearsing the material and working the young rhythm section, Zach (13) and Isaac (19)... Playing in a band with young people like this is a whole new approach for Brian and myself, but strangely enough, the chemistry between the four of us has thus far been wonderful...

I never imagined I would be in a band with my son, so this is like a dream come true, personally speaking... And watching him fall hopelessly in love with music has been such a cool thing... All he wants to do is listen to great bands, play and continue evolving as a musician...

Isaac is committed to his continued growth as well... His YouTube channel features videos of him drumming to some really good songs, and he just keeps getting better and better...

Having a couple of under-21-year-olds in the group may prove to present its complications and occasional limitations in terms of the types of venues we can play, but we are approaching it all with a "let's make this work for us, rather than against us" attitude...

Throughout the years, Brian and I have each done our fair share of gigs that lead nowhere... At this stage of our careers, we know there will still be dues to pay, but that doesn't mean we can't map this out in a slightly different way from what a lot of other bands are doing...

For instance, one of the things we've been talking about is setting up a house concert tour once the album is released...

The idea would be to reach out to people in our fanbase to see who might be interested in hosting all-ages shows in their homes or venues in their towns... Perhaps with other young local bands from their areas...

This could be a really cool thing if we do it right, don't you think?

Anyway, that is something we'll be looking at for sometime around spring 2018... In the meantime, feel free to message over any feedback, ideas you may have for this... We could definitely use some help getting this off the ground...

In other news, Zach and I have been faithfully putting out new episodes of "Influences" each week on our YouTube channel... We plan on getting into some local-level bands, authors, filmmakers, etc. at some point in the near future, so keep an eye open for that...

And last but not least, if you're on Facebook and haven't joined our private group over there, we'd like to welcome you to do so... We usually post daily, so it's a good way to keep connected on a more regular basis...
