~Story behind the song~

A few years back, I had a friend who was a pretty nice, generous guy… We hung out a lot and had a lot of mutual friends…

Then he got on Facebook, and, like certain individuals we’ve all known, he started to develop a pretty serious “god complex” of sorts…

His “dime store wisdom” posts were incessant… and nauseatingly patronizing, to be honest…

And even though it was a rare thing for him to receive much more than one “like” for his posts, rants, memes, condescending comments on other people’s posts, etc., he never let up… It was as if he was on a crusade…

Well, come to find out, he was…

The guy went nuts… He really came to believe that he was some kind of prophet, chosen to save the rest of us from utter ruin...

It all came to a head when I happened across him commenting on one of our mutual friend’s posts… He was publicly criticizing her for being overweight, claiming that the Bible says it’s a sin, etc., blah blah blah…

That was it; our entire circle of close friends un-friended and blocked him... Thankfully, that’s the last we heard of him…

But I’m sure he’s still out there to this day, raging on with his campaign of ignorance…

As I said, most of us have seen this person online far too often… It’s become a major obstacle to productive communication between people…

Social media has given everyone a platform to spread their messages… and, wow… some people’s messages are pretty hateful, aren’t they?

I personally find it interesting how certain people seem to feel that they couldn’t ever possibly be wrong about their ideas… There is no hope for an honest, good-faith conversation with such types; they seem only interested in being right, and force-feeding their perspective to others…

Perhaps these instances are symptomatic of a bigger picture… Lately, it seems we’re becoming more and more estranged from one another… I honestly can’t remember a time in my life when it was nearly as bad as what we’re seeing these days in the digital age…

It’s a bit like when people are driving, and how they interact with others on the roads… They seem to feel insulated from actual human interaction… The lower instincts take over and people begin to behave in ways they never would, face-to-face…

Can you imagine standing behind someone at the bank and yelling, "Hurry the *&^%$+ up and get out of my way!!!"?

And yet, when sheltered by the anonymity a computer or smart phone screen provides, people just let it rip with the rudeness and cruelty, much like when driving...

How do we even begin to go about fixing this?
