The Widetrack Chronicles 87: Our Driving Motivation

The Widetrack Chronicles 87: Our Driving Motivation

At some point in our lives, each of us is asked, “What positive contribution(s) are you making/did you make to the world? How did you, in your own small way, leave it a better place than you found it?"

For us, the answer to this question is, "By creating a specific blend of music that's available only through us, and which has a positive impact on the people with whom it resonates..."

Indeed, besides the fact that we find writing/recording/performing music to be just plain FUN, our primary driving motivation is the desire to create something that only we are capable of creating; however insignificant that may ultimately end up being in the grand scheme of things...

Without exception, all the bands we most admire have held to the principle of creative self actualization: they never altered their music in any way, shape or form to fit in with where the popular music of their time happened to be...

Though a much more difficult path, the rewards to this are immense... Setting out to create something directly from our souls, with zero compromise, with all the musical "craftsmanship" we're capable of, that never quite existed before, and feeling we've succeeded in doing so, is as amazing a feeling as we’ve experienced in life...

Being avid music fans ourselves, when we survey history's blessedly rich musical landscape, we find that, when done right, our music, while having its influences, inhabits its own unique area...

This is the essence of it all, for us... We live to create a musical experience one can get only by listening to Widetrack...

The fact that this of course means many may not be into what we create is just part of the deal...Because the plain fact is, there will always be people who don’t get one's personal type of self-expression, regardless of how well one does it...

But artistic integrity demands that we disregard the need for such approval, and so, yes, we do create first and foremost for ourselves... but a close second to this is creating for the ones our music resonates with, who feel they can’t get this specific music anywhere else...

It’s like that with humans as well... How many people have you encountered in your life who can never be replaced? They are their own unique entities, and staying true to that is their gift to the world...

We can't imagine them hiding who they really are, just so people who don't get them will possibly accept them...

What a shame that so many choose to be carbon copies, when the ability to be one's own unique self is an option all along...

Consider the analogy of music being like a big stew... Some people prefer a lot of salt; some people don’t like salt at all... Some want tomatoes... Some want no meat... The amount of this and that, the temperature it's cooked at, the quality of the ingredients one puts into one's own stew, etc., etc.... all these factors differ wildly from person to person, artist to artist...

And well they should... Art is a means to be unashamedly particular...

Why do we like specific artists such as King Crimson, Prince, Pink Floyd, etc., etc., while passionately disliking others; many of which possessing similar elements to their music?

More than an artist's given genre, it seems there's some common thread between the music we really dig.., and we're merely following that thread as best we can, in the effort to self-actualize our own music...

Each of us has that inner compass which guides us towards/away from particular music, and it's important that we stay true to it...

This even applies to how we can each share a love for a certain band's music with many other people, and yet favorite songs will differ, person to person...

It's always interesting to us to hear which of our songs resonate with different people... Of course we have our personal favorites, but those favorites aren't always necessarily shared by others... Some people even like songs we don't really much care for anymore (but that's another topic altogether, lol)...

Anyway, appreciate you reading these thoughts... We're deeply thankful for your support and encouragement of our music...
